Working it Out, TMR-Style

Custom Projects

“For the Pura Vida Urban Fitness project,” says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “we basically got an online inquiry that read, ‘Can you build me a structure that eight people could hang from simultaneously while doing rigorous exercise?’ and we said, ‘Yeah. We can do that,’ and we did.”

Scott says he found the entire Pura Vida project to be just as straightforward and smooth as its inception, saying, “What I really enjoyed about this project was the simplicity and ease that this project went together. From start to finish, the client was great to work with, it flowed through my shop very easily and was delivered within the time frame that we had promised.”

So, what was it, anyway? Well, Pura Vida Urban Fitness is a Prospect Heights fitness studio. The owner contacted TMRnyc because the gym needed a structure from which to hang fitness equipment and from which gym members could hang while working out. A previous structure hadn’t held up to the stress of all that weight, and it needed to be replaced, so owner Morgan Sevigny reached out to the experts at TMRnyc to get the job done right.

“For this project,” says Scott, “we wanted to give the space an industrial look that wasn’t overpowering and would blend in with Morgan’s existing design. We needed to plan, design, fabricate, and install. So, I went with a truss design that resembled a staging or bridge-type structure.”

It took design, structural engineering, and installation expertise to fabricate this structure and install it in a working commercial space that could afford very little functional disruption.

“We didn’t want Morgan to have to shut down the gym!” says Scott. “That’s another reason we went with the design we did. It allowed us to meet the client’s needs, budget, and desire for minimal on-site disruption, yet it was also light enough to carry and install in place without field welding.”

The finished product is exactly what Pura Vida needed, and that’s what the TMRnyc team loves to hear.

Introducing the New TMRnyc Van

March 15th, 2012

Behind the Scenes

If you’ve been out and about in NYC recently, you may have noticed the TMRnyc van rolling around. Sometimes people seem a bit surprised to see us motoring around the city so much, especially considering we’re custom metal fabricators and people often assume we pretty much live in the shop. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Total Metal Resource NYC is a custom metal fabrication company, but we’re also an architectural metalwork firm. The difference? We don’t just make incredible custom metal furnishings. We install them. We build to our clients’ most exacting specifications from highly detailed shop drawings, and then we transport and install their custom designs wherever they need to go. We see each project through from concept to cleanup because we are more than metal fabricators.

Installations are as much a part of what we do as any of our metalworking fabrication processes. Need entirely new hanging window baskets built into your retrofitted brownstone? We’ll build it, and then we’ll safely transport and securely install it. Beyond installing our own work, we actually tackle emergencies and installations of third-party products. So, if your oversized, thousand-pound antique mirror wasn’t properly anchored to the wall, you can call us and expect to see the TMRnyc van come rolling up STAT.

Have a massive piece of artwork you need lifted through a window and into a third-story room for proper installation? Yeah, we do that. And that’s what the van’s for.

Have you seen us around town?

Snap a pic and post it to our Facebook wall! Or Tweet us! We want to hear from you, and we’ll let you know what we were up to!

Hand-forged Brooklyn Brownstone Baskets

March 8th, 2012

Custom Projects

Brooklyn is home base to the custom metal fabrication team at TMRnyc, so any time we get a chance to beautify the neighborhood, we’re pretty excited. Enter our latest project, a brownstone renovation in NYC’s historic Park Slope area.

Says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “This multi-million dollar renovation project has us busy with a custom metal gate and these window baskets which are pretty awesome.” Awesome is right. Check out the pictures Scott snapped during the installation.

Custom metal fabrication has a lot of elements, and every project brings a new challenge to the table with different skill sets coming into play. Fortunately, TMRnyc is ready for whatever comes up.

“We’re using hand-forged elements in the Park Slope brownstone baskets, which is a very traditional form of metalworking,” says Behr. “But we’re also working on other projects with modern laser cutting and stainless steel. Being able to utilize these different processes keeps it interesting and ensures we can fabricate whatever custom metal objects our clients need.”

With blacksmiths, glass workers, mold makers, engineers, designers, and other experts on the TMRnyc team, switching between processes during concurrent projects isn’t a challenge; it’s just part of what we do.

Whether you’re dreaming of beautifying a brownstone or adding some luxury to your loft, TMRnyc has the skills and knowledge to work with you from concept through installation to bring your vision into reality.

What do your dreams look like?

Mirror Mirror On The Wall…

January 27th, 2012

TMRnyc Channel MirrorAt TMRnyc, we’re metal fabricators NYC residents and business owners know for unique metal products and custom metal furniture.

But we just can’t stand being typecast like a redheaded child star, so we have to break out of that custom metal role once in a while and make something a little different. And what’s as different as can be from sturdy, durable, tough-as-nails metal?

Mirrors. Gorgeous, stylish, who’s-the-fairest?-determining mirrors.

Our “Twin-Angle Mirror” is one you have to see in person. We get excited whenever somebody buys one because that means we get to make more. Then there’s the “Massive 4” Angle Mirror.” We chose this name because it really is that big.

A full-length mirror in a gorgeous steel angle frame, it’s ninety-six inches tall with an enormously fabulous steel frame that turns a bathroom standard to an any-room focal point. Last up, the “Channel Mirror.” This one is a 34-inch, rolled channel, steel-framed mirror. Simply gorgeous, this sleek, circular design fits well just about anywhere: home, office, lobby, restaurant, garage…

There’s nothing we like more than metal fabrication. Brooklyn is our home, and we love beautifying it (and all of NY) through custom metal work. How better to do that than by reflecting NY’s beauty back with some of the sweetest mirrors around?

Where do you want to add some beauty? Give us a call and we’ll help you get started.

Custom-Fabricated Metal Seating: Modern Seating Pulls Double Duty

January 11th, 2012

Diamond Plated Box SeatingIt’s a chair! It’s a bench! It’s a table! It’s a … what exactly is that?

“That” is a diamond-plated box, and it’s one of the simplest yet most functional designs we’ve got here at TMRnyc’s metal fabrication shop.

Brooklyn, NYC residents and business owners alike have been snapping up these utilitarian conversation pieces because they’re not only completely on-trend, they’re diversely functional and durable.

Measuring 12 inches by 12 inches square and 20 inches high, the Diamond-Plated Box seating element is industrial and minimal in design, yet something about it simply works in modern, trendy spaces. Initially meant as seating options, we’ve seen plenty of clients use them as small metal tables.

NYC designers like them as edgy ottomans as well, and they just seem to pull their weight no matter where they’re placed in a room.

One of the fun things about custom metal furniture is that, unlike wood or plastic, metal is durable enough to be used in multiple ways without showing wear. In fact, most of our sleek designs look better as they develop a patina with age. So when it’s time for a change, you can take that Diamond-Plated Box and use it as a table instead of the chair it’s been, or vice versa.

Pair it with a funky table lamp if it used to be a seating element, or plunk it down in the middle of the room as a coffee table if you’ve been using it at the end of a couch. That’s the fun part: The Diamond-Plated Box is whatever you think it is. All we know is that it’s cool.
