Last week, we were excited to hear that Richard Frazier, a good friend of the shop, had his new showroom featured on the notable design blog, “Ask Patrick.” The blog, written by interior designer, stylist, and stager, Patrick Hamilton, takes a tour through the Frazier Collection, located at 200 Lex in NYC.

For the TMRnyc team, seeing the Frazier Collection featured was doubly exciting because we contributed to the showroom space with some custom metal work.

We built these fantastic ironwork frames that are intentionally a bit rough and rugged. Designed to be easily moved around the showroom, TMR’s Scott Behr says, “These frames were made to be decorated or used as spatial separators.”

Rough-hewn ironwork frames definitely make for some unique metal products, but they’re certainly not the only ones you’ll find in the Frazier Collection. Richard has integrated some fantastic metalwork elements into his line of classic, elegant, scaled down, yet masculine furnishings.

Says Hamilton on his blog: “One thing that links [all of these pieces together] is a love of metalwork, in studs (yay!), banding, ferrules, finials and jewelry-like hardware. Bronzes, brass, warm nickel and burnished gold are the metals of choice at Frazier, and a high level of customization means you’ll get exactly the piece you came in for.”

Often, once we install a piece of custom metal work in NYC, we don’t actually get to see it in use that much. So it’s a real treat getting to see our ironwork frames in action at Frazier’s showroom and on Hamilton’s blog.

“For the Pura Vida Urban Fitness project,” says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “we basically got an online inquiry that read, ‘Can you build me a structure that eight people could hang from simultaneously while doing rigorous exercise?’ and we said, ‘Yeah. We can do that,’ and we did.”

Scott says he found the entire Pura Vida project to be just as straightforward and smooth as its inception, saying, “What I really enjoyed about this project was the simplicity and ease that this project went together. From start to finish, the client was great to work with, it flowed through my shop very easily and was delivered within the time frame that we had promised.”

So, what was it, anyway? Well, Pura Vida Urban Fitness is a Prospect Heights fitness studio. The owner contacted TMRnyc because the gym needed a structure from which to hang fitness equipment and from which gym members could hang while working out. A previous structure hadn’t held up to the stress of all that weight, and it needed to be replaced, so owner Morgan Sevigny reached out to the experts at TMRnyc to get the job done right.

“For this project,” says Scott, “we wanted to give the space an industrial look that wasn’t overpowering and would blend in with Morgan’s existing design. We needed to plan, design, fabricate, and install. So, I went with a truss design that resembled a staging or bridge-type structure.”

From Sketch

To Fabrication

It took design, structural engineering, and installation expertise to fabricate this structure and install it in a working commercial space that could afford very little functional disruption.

“We didn’t want Morgan to have to shut down the gym!” says Scott. “That’s another reason we went with the design we did. It allowed us to meet the client’s needs, budget, and desire for minimal on-site disruption, yet it was also light enough to carry and install in place without field welding.”

The finished product is exactly what Pura Vida needed, and that’s what the TMRnyc team loves to hear.

Just this week, Scott Behr, owner of TMRnyc, was reading The New York Times online, and he came across a Home & Garden piece by Steven Kurutz about the need for today’s furniture manufacturers to adapt their designs to our new digital lifestyle.

“It was called Furniture Meets the Digital Age,’” says Behr with a smile. “Great article, and the guy’s right – furniture needs to change to not only reflect how we live today but actually support that lifestyle. That is, it’s not enough to have a shelf for your iPhone to sit on next to your bed at night. You need a docking station so the phone can be accessible while charging. Still,” Behr continues, “reading that piece, I couldn’t help thinking, ‘Yeah, we’ve been doing that at TMRnyc for several years now.’”

In particular, Behr was referencing the SideWired™ Furniture line. In 2009, some of the TMRnyc team members simply got fed up with the constant cord clutter challenge so many people hassle with daily, especially on their desks.

On a given desk, the average person might always have a lamp, a printer, an external hard drive, and a phone. But then add in the portables that need constant charging for efficient use such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops, and suddenly the desk is a crisscross of cords, all of which trail down over the edge onto a power strip that’s plugged into the wall. It’s messy, disorganized, and ruins the aesthetic appeal of what might otherwise be a gorgeous office.

From this observation was born the SideWired™ Desk, a prototype for the Brooklyn Design 2009 show, which ultimately gave way to the entire SideWired™ Furniture line.

The desk is a minimalist design, clean, with a glass top. Beneath that glass top is a flip-down compartment for adapters and coils of excess cord length. The necessary amount of cord is fed up through small holes in the glass, while the plug is fed toward the side of the desk where it plugs into a/c outlets that are built right into the UL-Listed desk itself. The desk plugs into the wall, and functions safely with a simple on/off switch that serves as a surge protector to safeguard your electronics.

“Today’s technology is about integration and customization,” says Behr, “and your furniture should be, too. That’s what works about the SideWired™ line. It’s furniture for the way we live. Now.”

What do you think of the SideWired™ line? In what style of desk would you like to see this functionality? We’re working on some exciting new designs, so stay tuned to the TMRnyc blog for product updates and exciting news!

Friend of the shop, Derek Haffar, introduced the TMRnyc team to Abdessemed when the artist was looking for a space in which to work on his ironically titled piece, Hope. The entire TMRnyc team was eager to participate in a new, different project that was truly art for art’s sake. Says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “Derek spearheaded the creation of the cast garbage bags and the overall production of the artwork. It was a really interesting project to work on. Our unique shop happens to have a ground floor, drive-in space, and our 5,000 square-foot shop made it possible to accommodate such an unusual request.”

The end product, Hope, is installed at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York. Reviewers are deconstructing the work and hailing it as brilliant irony and social commentary. Artnet.com’s Emily Nathan says of the piece, “The attitude of Algerian-born, Paris-based artist Adel Abdessemed (b. 1971) is distinctly embodied in an installation that anchors his current exhibition at David Zwirner gallery in Chelsea — a foundered dinghy that he discovered in the Florida Keys, shipped to New York, filled with cast resin sculptures of black garbage bags and perversely titled Hope (2011-2012).”

The vision was Abdessemed’s. The concept. The goal. This time around, the TMRnyc team was glad to take a supporting role and just help out another artist.

Total Metal Resource NYC is a custom metal fabrication company, but we’re also an architectural metalwork firm. The difference? We don’t just make incredible custom metal furnishings. We install them. We build to our clients’ most exacting specifications from highly detailed shop drawings, and then we transport and install their custom designs wherever they need to go. We see each project through from concept to cleanup because we are more than metal fabricators.

Installations are as much a part of what we do as any of our metalworking fabrication processes. Need an entirely new mono-stringer staircase built into your retrofitted brownstone? We’ll build it, and then we’ll safely transport and securely install it. Beyond installing our own work, we actually tackle emergencies and installations of third-party products. So, if your oversized, thousand-pound antique mirror wasn’t properly anchored to the wall, you can call us and expect to see the TMRnyc van come rolling up STAT.

Have a massive piece of artwork you need lifted through a window and into a third-story room for proper installation? Yeah, we do that. And that’s what the van’s for.

Have you seen us around town?

Snap a pic and post it to our Facebook wall! Or Tweet us! We want to hear from you, and we’ll let you know what we were up to!

Enter our latest project, a brownstone renovation in NYC’s historic Park Slope area.

Says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “This multi-million dollar renovation project has us busy with a custom metal gate and these window baskets which are pretty awesome.” Awesome is right. Check out the pictures Scott snapped during the installation.

Custom metal fabrication has a lot of elements, and every project brings a new challenge to the table with different skill sets coming into play. Fortunately, TMRnyc is ready for whatever comes up.

“We’re using hand-forged elements in the Park Slope brownstone baskets, which is a very traditional form of metalworking,” says Behr. “But we’re also working on other projects with modern laser cutting and stainless steel. Being able to utilize these different processes keeps it interesting and ensures we can fabricate whatever custom metal objects our clients need.”

With blacksmiths, glass workers, mold makers, engineers, designers, and other experts on the TMRnyc team, switching between processes during concurrent projects isn’t a challenge; it’s just part of what we do.

Whether you’re dreaming of beautifying a brownstone or adding some luxury to your loft, TMRnyc has the skills and knowledge to work with you from concept through installation to bring your vision into reality.

What do your dreams look like?

Even if you don’t know the Maytex brand name, odds are you’ve seen their innovative yet beautiful products.

Makers of all sorts of shower and window curtains, slipcovers, table covers, and more, Maytex is a global organization with worldwide distribution centers.

Recently, TMRnyc was called in to do some custom metal fabrication and installation for Maytex’s NYC shower curtain showroom where they display their items for buyers from Walmart and other large retailers.

Now, we’ve done some different projects here at TMRnyc, but a custom metal installation to give a room filled with shower curtains a flowing, sculptural feel a la minimalist American sculptor Richard Serra was definitely something new.

Maytex’s long-time designer, Jo Waller, had drawn up some sketches of her ideas for the space but, says TMRnyc’s Scott Behr, “Everyone else wanted a fortune and wouldn’t do the installation. We were able to work this out … within budget and do it. We juggled some projects and got it done on time.”

Meeting a client’s budget is a major factor, of course. But for Behr, being able to do everything, from concept through installation, is truly what separates TMRnyc from the pack. Taking each project through installation ensures that the project ultimately matches up with the client’s expectations and the designer’s concept.

Says Behr, “This is really what sets us apart from other fabricators – the installation aspect. We don’t make anything without a really detailed set of shop drawings so the client always knows what to expect with the finished product.”

At TMRnyc, we’re metal fabricators NYC residents and business owners know for unique metal products and custom metal furniture.

But we just can’t stand being typecast like a redheaded child star, so we have to break out of that custom metal role once in a while and make something a little different. And what’s as different as can be from sturdy, durable, tough-as-nails metal?

Mirrors. Gorgeous, stylish, who’s-the-fairest?-determining mirrors.

Our “Twin-Angle Mirror” is one you have to see in person. We get excited whenever somebody buys one because that means we get to make more. Then there’s the “Massive 4” Angle Mirror.” We chose this name because it really is that big.

A full-length mirror in a gorgeous steel angle frame, it’s ninety-six inches tall with an enormously fabulous steel frame that turns a bathroom standard to an any-room focal point. Last up, the “Channel Mirror.” This one is a 34-inch, rolled channel, steel-framed mirror. Simply gorgeous, this sleek, circular design fits well just about anywhere: home, office, lobby, restaurant, garage…

There’s nothing we like more than metal fabrication. Brooklyn is our home, and we love beautifying it (and all of NY) through custom metal work. How better to do that than by reflecting NY’s beauty back with some of the sweetest mirrors around?

Where do you want to add some beauty? Give us a call and we’ll help you get started.

When you’re selling a home, Realtors spend a lot of time telling you to increase your “curb appeal.”

You know the concept: make the house look good from the outside to give a good first impression before buyers even cross the threshold. The same holds true for commercial spaces, particularly when you’re looking to increase foot traffic.

One way we like to help local business owners increase their curb appeal is by creating pieces through custom metal fabrication NYC shops can use to attract customers.

Even better, we make those unique metal products functional, so they’re more than eye candy – they’re usable, durable pieces of art that serve an actual purpose while also bringing in passersby.

44 Berry Awning Finished

Sometimes, a project like this is as simple as creating a unique awning for a storefront, as we did for the lofts at 44 Berry. This is a piece of custom metal work NYC residents in the area pass daily, and it serves as an address sign, awning, and artistic expression of the building’s overall feel.

For a restaurant, this type of external “branding” can be extremely attractive to potential diners, and that’s always money well spent.

Instead of the standard fare tables and chairs, you can create a bistro feel for your restaurant’s outdoor patio by having us create some customized small metal tables NYC commuters love for convenience and ambiance.

Set them under a specialty awning and pair with some chic lighting from our electrically inclined metal fabricators: NYC meets Paris right on your front patio.

What does your storefront say about you? Give TMRnyc a call and see how we can bring the indoor feel of your shop out into the light.

The right lighting can make a difference in how your furniture looks (especially that cool custom metal furniture!) by casting different levels of light and color, how comfortable the room is for reading or conversation, and how the atmosphere of the room feels.

Without the right lighting, your space can feel too bright, too dark, or uninspired. But with a little custom metal fabrication, NYC homes and businesses alike can have those unique metal products that create just the right finishing touches no matter where you need them.

True, usually we’re busy at TMRnyc making our super manly belt buckle, The RetroCard Belt Buckle; or our man-cave fave, The Pipe Bomb Bar. Or we’re off installing a mono stringer staircase or a custom sign or … you get the picture.

But we dig getting our electrical groove on with some lighting fabrication. And yes, it’s all UL-listed and all that good stuff. New York diners can catch glimpses of some of our handiwork over at Colicchio & Sons, where we installed some super cool custom lighting to make their oven hood glow like a burning ember.

Whether you need a massive lighting installation for your customized, wood-burning, industrial oven, or you just want some kickin’ sconces for your patio, TMRnyc has your lighting needs covered. Plus, we can make it all mesh and match with the rest of your custom metal furniture, because we’re cool like that.

Contact TMRnyc for your custom metal fabrication needs.
